Visa just cut 320 jobs at its Foster City headquarters, and the paperwork says it plainly: this is an AI restructuring. Six vice presidents earning up to $458,000 are out, along with 37 senior directors and 16 engineering leads. The cuts take effect October 1, right after Visa closed its $2.4 billion BioCatch acquisition. It's part of a bigger plan from CEO Ryan McInerney to shrink headcount by 7%, and it's happening in our backyard.
At the same time, Microsoft just told its own engineers to cool it on AI spending. An internal memo from EVP Jay Parikh says some teams are burning thousands of dollars a month on AI coding tools, and it's telling them to stop "tokenmaxxing" and start using cheaper models by default. Two very different companies, same underlying story: AI cost and AI headcount decisions are colliding right now, and it's showing up in real paychecks and real jobs.

• Visa's layoffs came with an AI label attached to them
A WARN filing shows 320 people are losing their jobs at Visa's Foster City headquarters on October 1, including six vice presidents and dozens of senior directors and engineering leads. CEO Ryan McInerney has framed the broader 7% workforce cut as part of integrating AI into how the company operates, and the timing lines up with Visa's newly closed $2.4 billion purchase of fraud-detection company BioCatch. Why it matters: this isn't a startup trimming costs, it's one of the biggest payment companies in the world putting "AI" on a layoff notice, and other large employers are watching how it lands.
• Microsoft just told its engineers to stop spending so much on AI
A memo from EVP Jay Parikh introduced spending targets for AI tools across engineering teams, saying flatly that "tokenmaxxing is not what we are optimizing for." Some engineers were reportedly running up bills from a few hundred to a few thousand dollars a month on Copilot, and Microsoft is now defaulting many of them to a cheaper in-house model instead. Why it matters: for a year, the message to engineers everywhere was "use AI as much as you can." Microsoft just became one of the first major employers to say the opposite out loud.
• A court just made AI shopping agents easier to trust
A federal appeals court overturned an earlier order that had blocked Perplexity's shopping assistant, Comet, from working on Amazon. The judges ruled it was users, not Perplexity, who were technically "accessing" Amazon, and called it unlikely Amazon would win the underlying case. Why it matters: this is one of the first real court rulings on whether an AI agent can legally act on your behalf across a website that doesn't want it there, and it sets a marker for every AI shopping and browsing tool built after it.

Oxide Computer Raises $445 Million
Oxide Computer, which builds private, on-site computing hardware as an alternative to renting from the big cloud providers, quietly raised $445 million, more than double its last funding round from December. The company sells complete server racks, built to work like a private version of a hyperscaler's data center, and counts trading firms and national research labs among its customers. This new round puts real money behind the idea that some companies would rather own their AI infrastructure outright than keep renting it.
