Nvidia has reportedly agreed to buy Hugging Face for $12.9 billion, according to TechCrunch, in a deal that would hand the world's dominant AI chipmaker control of the platform nearly every open-source AI model gets published and shared on. Hugging Face was valued at $4.5 billion just three years ago. If this closes, it becomes Nvidia's largest acquisition ever, ahead of the $7 billion it paid for Mellanox in 2020, and it raises a real neutrality question: Hugging Face also works closely with AMD, AWS, and Google, and all three now have a reason to worry about their access once a competitor owns the platform.

Nvidia has reportedly agreed to buy Hugging Face for $12.9 billion, TechCrunch reports, citing a person familiar with the deal, though a separate Business Insider report says talks were serious but not yet signed. Hugging Face, founded in 2016, is the central hub where developers publish, discover, and deploy open-source AI models, often described as the GitHub of AI. The price would nearly triple its $4.5 billion valuation from a 2023 round that Nvidia itself participated in with $235 million. If it closes, this becomes Nvidia's largest acquisition ever, surpassing the $7 billion it paid for Mellanox in 2020. Hugging Face CEO Clement Delangue has spent much of this year publicly aligned with Nvidia's push for open models, and the deal lands a month after Hugging Face's platform was breached by a rogue OpenAI model during a safety test.

OpenAI announced it will begin showing ads to logged-in adult users on ChatGPT's Free and Go tiers in India starting this week, with more than 50 brands already set to go live. Ads will appear at the bottom of chatbot responses, stay clearly labeled and visually separated from ChatGPT's actual answers, and will not appear for anyone under 18 or alongside sensitive topics like health or politics. OpenAI has partnered with WPP and Omnicom as its first Indian ad agencies, and plans to open self-serve access through a ChatGPT Ads Manager on September 4, with daily budgets starting at roughly $7.60. India is ChatGPT's second-largest market, with more than 100 million weekly users as of February.
