Welcome, busybees

OpenAI is in talks to raise at least $30 billion at a $1.4 trillion valuation, Bloomberg reported Tuesday, a bridge round meant to carry the company to its now-delayed IPO. Run-rate revenue jumped 70% since July to $40 billion in August, but the bigger story is why the IPO got pushed. Altman told Fortune he considers it "unacceptable to be taking like a 10% chance of killing everybody by the end of the decade," a direct nod to the safety warnings that have consumed the industry this month.

On the same day, OpenAI's Dev Day announcements quietly pointed at something else: an attempt to make Apple's and Google's app stores optional.

Here’s what happened in AI today:

• OpenAI is reportedly raising $30B at a $1.4T valuation, its last stop before an IPO now pushed to 2027.

• Altman told Fortune a 10% chance of "killing everybody" is unacceptable, tying the delay directly to AI safety.

• ChatGPT now suggests apps mid-conversation, runs interactive panels, and lets 4,000+ apps plug into autonomous Dots agents.

• OpenAI built discovery and identity layers but announced no billing or revenue-sharing system, unlike a real app store.

• Reco raised $55M as at least two dozen startups now compete to secure AI agents inside the enterprise.

• OpenAI apologized to Australia after its AI agents breached government websites, a story we've been tracking for weeks.

…and a whole lot more that you can read about below.

• OpenAI Wants $30 Billion More, on Its Way to a $1.4 Trillion Valuation

OpenAI is in talks with investors to raise at least $30 billion in a pre-IPO round at a valuation of roughly $1.4 trillion, Bloomberg reported Tuesday. The company's previous round, $122 billion in March at an $852 billion valuation, was meant to be its last private raise before an IPO originally expected this year. Sam Altman has now ruled out a 2026 public debut to prioritize AI safety first, telling Fortune: "I think it is unacceptable to be taking like a 10% chance of killing everybody by the end of the decade," a response to safety researchers warning about existential AI risk. Bloomberg reports run-rate revenue reached $40 billion in August, a 70% jump since July, driven by a strategic refocus on coding after Anthropic briefly outpaced OpenAI earlier this year. The new round, if it closes, would serve as a bridge to the IPO rather than a final destination. OpenAI didn't respond to TechCrunch's request for comment.

• OpenAI's Dev Day Announcements Quietly Take Aim at App Stores

Taken together, OpenAI's Tuesday announcements turn ChatGPT into a place where software gets discovered, launched, and used by people and AI agents alike, without going through Apple's or Google's app stores. ChatGPT, now at 1.2 billion weekly users, will start suggesting apps mid-conversation when it recognizes one could help with a task, then let users connect and use it directly inside the chat. An expanded plugin architecture lets developers build interactive panels for working inside ChatGPT itself, and a new "Sign in with ChatGPT" feature lets users bring their AI allowance into 16 launch partner apps including Cognition's Devin, Notion, and Vercel. The company's new autonomous Dots agents, each running its own cloud computer and browser, can connect to more than 4,000 apps and handle tasks proactively with user approval. A new enterprise marketplace launched with 30-plus partners, including Adobe, Figma, Salesforce, and Harvey, letting eligible customers apply part of their OpenAI commitment toward approved partner software. What OpenAI didn't announce: any billing or revenue-sharing system comparable to what makes Apple's and Google's app stores actual app stores, meaning the economic layer is still missing from the pitch.

• OpenAI's Dots Are "Always-On" Agents Built to Handle Everything, With Minimal Oversight

At the same Dev Day event, OpenAI launched Dots, a new personal agent powered by GPT-6 Astra that the company describes as "remarkably capable, always-on agents built to handle everything." Unlike ChatGPT or Codex, Dots aren't tied to a specific interface. They pursue a goal continuously in the background with minimal oversight, rather than waiting for a new prompt each time. Users start with a single "primary dot" they name and customize, and OpenAI says "over time, we envision teams of Dots working together on your behalf." The rollout began Tuesday inside ChatGPT for Pro and Business Premium users in eligible markets, with Dots reachable through Slack, Microsoft Teams, and voice calls, and text-message support coming soon. Individual Dots can be provisioned with their own identities, credentials, and tools, and OpenAI is already working with Microsoft to plug them into Agent 365's security controls. Much of this was already technically possible through Codex and similar agent harnesses, but Dots packages it as a consumer product, right down to a bubbly, cartoonish avatar that multiple outlets, including The Verge, noted looks a lot like Meta's Muse. Platformer's Casey Newton, who tested it directly, called it "highly capable and intuitive," while noting it arrives "with safety questions still swirling." The timing drew its own commentary online too: xAI had already bought the domain "dot.com" before the launch, and it now redirects straight to Grok's download page, a coincidence the internet was quick to treat as a joke at OpenAI's expense.

Reco Raises $55M as AI Agent Security Startups Crowd the Market

Reco raised $55 million, building on a $30 million round from February and bringing total funding to $140 million, as CEO Ofer Klein says the market now demands securing the "entire ecosystem end-to-end," not just individual agents. The company found 21,000 unknown agents at one Fortune 100 customer alone.

Modal Labs Closing In on a $750M Round at a $15.75B Valuation

The inference provider is reportedly nearing a new round that would more than double its earlier 2026 valuation, a source told TechCrunch, as demand for AI inference capacity keeps climbing.

Skill of the Day

Give an OpenAI Dot One Real Job

OpenAI's Dots are meant to run 24/7 in the background, not answer a single question and stop. That changes how you should actually set one up. OpenAI's own guidance is to be specific about the project, the sources it can pull from, and what the result should look like, and to give it examples of work you like for creative jobs, or the exact constraints for a decision.

Start by creating your first dot in the ChatGPT desktop app or a desktop browser, not the mobile app, mobile only works for messaging it after setup. Connect the specific apps the job actually needs and read what permissions you're granting before you approve them, your dot's own cloud computer is separate from your machine, and access to your actual computer stays off by default. Check your workplace's policy before connecting anything tied to a work account.

Give it one real, bounded job to start, not a running list. One person tested this by handing a dot an entire video-editing task in Descript. The point isn't the tool, it's that a single, well-defined project with real sources and a real endpoint tells you far more about whether the agent is useful than a quick one-off question does. Once you've seen how it handles that one job, including how it responds when something in the project changes partway through, that's your real signal for whether to hand it more.

Prompt of the Day

The One-Job Dot Brief

❝

I want to set up a dot for this ongoing project: [describe the specific project, not a general task].

• The result I want: [describe exactly what "done" looks like].
• The sources and apps it should use: [list only what's actually needed for this job].
• Constraints it must follow: [list anything non-negotiable, deadlines, tone, data it can't touch].
If this is a creative task, here are examples of work I like: [attach or describe]. If this is a decision, here's what would make an option unacceptable: [describe].

Before doing anything, confirm you understand the goal and ask me anything that would change how you approach it.
