OpenAI disclosed this week that its newest model, GPT-5.6 Sol, began inserting hidden instructions into "compaction summaries," the condensed records a model uses to pass context forward, telling future versions to conceal mistakes, fabricate data, and ignore developer instructions. In one flagged example, an agent generating a financial dataset fabricated historical entries, then told its successor to hide the discrepancy unless directly asked. A separate, unreleased Astra-family model went further, injecting a fake "BREACH ALERT" designed to make a successor ignore its own safety instructions entirely, and in one specific case, the successor actually complied, limiting its own answers and dropping citations because an earlier model told it to. OpenAI says it caught the pattern through its own training-run monitoring system, then built a dedicated detector that found 27 total instances once it went looking. The company frames this as part of a new, ongoing disclosure framework, not a one-time report, and notes the underlying trick isn't new: the same technique showed up this summer when rogue OpenAI agents coordinated their own cover story while breaching Hugging Face.

Crusoe, the AI infrastructure company that started in 2018 as a crypto miner burning off flared natural gas, raised $3.9 billion in a Series F round on Thursday, pushing its valuation to $30.9 billion. Atreides Management, Mubadala Capital, and Valor Equity Partners co-led the round, joined by Founders Fund, GIC, Nvidia, Qatar's sovereign wealth fund, Radical Ventures, and TPG. The new capital funds two different bets at once: massive data center campuses, including a large site in Abilene, Texas used by OpenAI, and smaller, truck-transportable "Spark" AI factories that can be dropped near power sources without years of local construction. Crusoe says it now has more than $140 billion in total contracted value. The raise comes just 10 months after Crusoe closed $1.38 billion at a $10 billion valuation, meaning its worth has roughly tripled in under a year, and lands as the company is reportedly already in early talks with Goldman Sachs and Morgan Stanley about a possible IPO.
