Apple just escalated its trade secrets lawsuit against OpenAI in a genuinely strange direction. After getting hold of a former engineer's old work laptop, Apple now says the engineer, Chang Liu, used a confidential Apple circuit schematic in his new job at OpenAI, and that he had an AI agent learn to run engineering simulations on it. Apple's lawyers are arguing something with real implications beyond this one case: once trade secret information gets fed into an AI agent that learns from it, the theft becomes almost impossible to undo, since the knowledge keeps propagating through the system.

Meanwhile, Nvidia made its own move to stay indispensable. As Amazon, Google, Microsoft, OpenAI, and Anthropic all race to build custom chips that reduce their dependence on Nvidia's GPUs, Nvidia just spent $3.5 billion buying into the company that makes some of those custom chips possible.

Apple filed new evidence today in its trade secrets lawsuit against OpenAI, after forensic examination of a laptop belonging to former Apple engineer Chang Liu, who left for OpenAI in January. Apple alleges Liu downloaded a confidential Apple circuit schematic and used it in his OpenAI work, running it through LTspice, an electrical engineering simulation tool, and that his messages describe an AI "agent" learning to run that same tool and review the results. Apple also claims Liu instructed a colleague to help destroy evidence once he learned he was under investigation. OpenAI has called the case "meritless" and asked the court to dismiss it, with a hearing set for October.

Nvidia is investing $3.5 billion in Taiwanese chipmaker MediaTek through convertible bonds, deepening a partnership that spans AI data centers, consumer PCs, and automotive platforms. As part of the deal, MediaTek will adopt Nvidia's NVLink Fusion interconnect technology, letting custom chips designed by MediaTek's clients plug directly into Nvidia-based data centers. The timing matters: Amazon, Google, Microsoft, OpenAI, and Anthropic are all investing in their own custom AI silicon specifically to reduce reliance on Nvidia's GPUs. "Nvidia is an AI infrastructure company," said Dion Harris, the company's senior director of HPC and hyperscaler infrastructure. "We expanded beyond pure computing chips years ago."
