There's a catch worth noticing: the group can offer unsolicited advice and comment publicly, but OpenAI explicitly says it "will not be responsible for advising us on how to pace our internal progress on mathematics." The move follows 25 Fields Medal winners signing an open letter earlier this month, warning that AI labs racing to claim famous results are threatening the mathematical community's own work.

OpenAI announced Monday that it has formed the Advisory Group on Mathematics and Artificial Intelligence, hosted at Princeton's Institute for Advanced Study, made up of nine mathematicians including Fields Medal winners Timothy Gowers, Martin Hairer, and physicist Edward Witten. The announcement doubled as a disclosure: OpenAI says the same internal model that produced a disputed Navier-Stokes proof has since resolved more than 100 additional open problems across most areas of mathematics, a pace the company admits surprised its own team. The advisory group's job is to assess the significance of these results and help coordinate how and when they're released, and members are unpaid specifically so they can criticize OpenAI publicly without a financial conflict. But the group has no power over the thing mathematicians actually asked for: OpenAI states plainly that "the group will not be responsible for advising us on how to pace our internal progress on mathematics." The tension isn't new. Earlier this month, 25 Fields Medal winners signed an open letter arguing that AI labs racing each other to claim famous unsolved problems threatens the field's own research culture.

Amazon began blocking Meta's Muse AI agent from shopping on Amazon.com on Sunday night, twelve days after Muse launched in the US, after Meta declined Amazon's request to voluntarily remove the retailer from the agent's shopping experience. Users now see a pop-up reading: "Continued access by an unauthorized AI agent violates Amazon's Conditions of Use." Amazon's stated concerns are specific: Muse doesn't identify itself as an AI agent while browsing, Meta never notified Amazon the integration was happening, and Amazon has raised questions about how the agent handles stored login credentials, something Meta disputes. The standoff is notable partly because the two companies are otherwise business partners, Amazon products are purchasable inside Instagram and Facebook, and Meta signed a multibillion-dollar deal in April to run its AI workloads on Amazon's own chips. This isn't Amazon's first fight over agentic shopping either: it previously sued Perplexity over its Comet browser agent and has separately blocked shopping agents from Google and OpenAI. Elon Musk weighed in publicly, predicting Amazon "won't be able to tell" AI agents from real human shoppers before long.

Meta's new AI agent Muse logged 1.8 million iOS downloads in the US and Canada during its first 12 days on the market, according to estimates from analytics firm Apptopia, compared with 1.3 million for ChatGPT over the same 12-day window after its own mobile debut. Daily active users tell a similar story: Muse hit roughly 359,000 daily iOS users in the US, versus ChatGPT's figures from the same point in its own launch. Over 95% of early Muse users are also Facebook users, and 63% use Instagram, suggesting Meta's built-in distribution across its existing apps is doing real work here, the same cross-promotion strategy that helped Threads reach 500 million users.
